BB28 Premiere: The Icons Walked In. One Walked Into a Volcano.
The BB28 premiere delivered on the Time Trip promise in one night: 14 newbies sorted through era safety comps, Angela Murray and Rick Devens moved in on air, Rachel Reilly entered and exited via volcano — with the first HOH held for Unlocked.
Big Brother 28 premiered Thursday, July 9, 2026 — 90 minutes on CBS and Paramount+ — and it did not spend that time on a soft intro night. The Time Trip theme wasn't set dressing. It was a delivery system. Safety competitions doubled as portals, and the portals kept spitting out returning reality players: Angela Murray, then Rick Devens, then Rachel Reilly. By the end of the episode, Rachel had been eliminated by a T-Rex-and-volcano sequence in a Jurassic first-HOH bit, and Julie Chen Moonves told everyone to come back Friday, July 10 at 8p for Big Brother: Unlocked to learn who replaces her and who actually holds the first HOH.
That's the premiere in one paragraph: vets delivered on air, a stunt exit before the game even started, and the first power decision pushed 24 hours down the road. We called the surprise houseguests the real BB28 story before the season started. Premiere night made that the text, not the subtext.
How the newbies got sorted
Fourteen new houseguests moved into the Time Trip house, and the show sorted them fast. Enzo — billed under Meow Meow Enterprises — set the frame: the dining table is a time machine, powered by vials of "BB Tonium." The first 12 houseguests to lock in correct #28 vials earned spots in the safety competitions. Lyric was the first to lock a correct vial, which is the kind of small premiere receipt that tends to matter later when edit-watchers argue about who the show noticed early.
We're not going to run all 14 bios here — the cast reveal note covers the roster, and we flagged then that the roster wasn't done. It wasn't. The safety comps came in three eras, and each era did double duty.
Era one and two: Angela, then Devens
The first trip landed on July 9, 1988 — an 80s mall/department store balance comp. Rome won it, and his prize came with a delivery job: hand a letter to a teen in the scene. The doorbell rang, and Angela Murray from BB26 walked into the house. Barrett said in the Diary Room he'd wanted Angela back, which is a DR beat worth remembering when premiere-week alliances start forming.
Trip two: July 7, 2018, Fiji, a Survivor-styled plank path with Chuk, Drew, Haley, and Taylor competing. Chuk won, the letter got read by Jeff Probst, and Rick Devens — two-time Survivor player — entered the house. Barrett and Drew both clocked him on sight.
Trip three was a club scene built on a word-count drink-names challenge among the final group — Yash, Lyric, Melody, and Jason. Jason won, and Julie confirmed the three safety winners for the week: Rome, Chuk, and Jason.
The first feed seed: Jason on Devens
One moment from the premiere reads like a feed-seed receipt rather than a full story: Jason pulled Melody aside in the bathroom hallway and told her not to trust Devens. That's it. That's the whole beat right now. But it's a newbie drawing a line against a returning player before the first HOH is even settled, and it's exactly the kind of thing we'll be checking against feed conversations once feeds go live. File it. Don't build a narrative on it yet.
Rachel, the volcano, and the held HOH
Rachel Reilly — BB12, BB13 winner, back again after BB27 — entered as the third icon, and the show immediately sent all three returnees to the Jurassic period via the dining table to compete for the first HOH. Rachel started into a long speech, got interrupted by a T-Rex sequence, and fell into a volcano. Julie confirmed Rachel's demise on air: she's out of the game, and someone will take her place.
To be clear about what that means and doesn't mean: Rachel is out. The first HOH winner was not revealed on the premiere. The replacement was not revealed on the premiere. Both are being held for Big Brother: Unlocked on Friday, July 10 at 8p. Julie also said America can impact the game over the first six weeks, which is a mechanic we'll cover once there's something concrete to press.
On the replacement: there is social chatter naming Dee Valladares as Rachel's stand-in. That is rumor. It was not confirmed by CBS on the premiere, and we are not treating it as fact until it's on the record. If Unlocked confirms it, we'll update. If it confirms someone else, the chatter was chatter.
What PocketBB tracks Friday
Our cast board already reflects the on-air move-ins: Angela Murray is in at id 714 and Rick Devens at id 715. The power board still shows no HOH, because there isn't one — and it stays empty until Unlocked or the show itself puts a name on it.
Friday, July 10 is a two-stage night: Unlocked at 8p should deliver the HOH winner and Rachel's replacement, and live feeds open at 9pm ET after Unlocked, per the premiere-week plan and matching social chatter. Once feeds start, the premiere's seeds — Barrett's Angela DR, Jason's Devens warning, whoever wears the HOH key — become checkable against actual house conversations. Our premiere week watch plan has the full schedule.
The premiere made one thing plain: BB28 is not easing into the twist. The vets are already inside, one icon is already gone, and the first real power reveal is a Friday-night event of its own.
