Evening Update: Rome Hits the Block — and the House Starts Counting

For a week and a half, the Rome backdoor was a thing houseguests talked about. As of Monday afternoon, it's a thing the board says. Rick Devens used the veto on Lyric Medeiros at the ceremony and named Rome Seymour as the replacement nominee, locking the Week 2 Blockbuster field at Jason De Puy, Melody Morris, and Rome. The plan is now official. What happened around it — the pre-ceremony vote commitments, the post-ceremony showmance reaffirmation, and the middle of the house quietly drafting next week — is where the actual game is.

The ceremony: Lyric down, Rome up, no surprises

Devens telegraphed this all morning. At 10:35 AM he told Taylor he'd probably save Lyric and put up Rome, adding that saving Lyric would demonstrate he actually liked her, despite what he'd told Rome. Feeds cut to animals at 11:50 AM, and when they returned around 1:06 PM the deed was done: Lyric off the block, Rome on it.

The immediate fallout was less strategy session, more reunion. Between 1:06 and 1:14 PM, Lyric hugged and kissed Rome, they said they loved each other, and she promised to play and campaign for him. Rome, for his part, leaned into the target — he called himself a shield, said he calls his shots, and told Lyric not to waste being saved. By 1:28 he was telling people he felt good, wanted to compete, and pitching a comparison campaign: he's trustworthy, Jason's a liar.

That's a real campaign frame, for what it's worth. It just needs an audience that's still listening.

The vote map: bad for Rome, but the Blockbuster is the Blockbuster

Here's the problem for Rome, in receipts:

• 9:48 AM — Yash told Devens he'd vote Rome out no matter who sat beside him and would follow Devens' target. Five minutes later he called the week a win-win, because either Jason or Rome leaves.
• 10:53 AM — Devens said out loud he hoped Rome would not win the Blockbuster. At 10:55, he and Barrett half-joked, half-worried that a surviving Rome could pull America's Time Capsule vote. Devens: "America, I'm sorry."
• 1:44 PM — Mallory told Melody she believed Rome leaves over Jason, and reported that LaTrice wants Rome out. Melody had been fretting about a flip to Jason; Mallory wasn't buying it.

So the anti-Rome vote looks strong, arguably decisive. But nobody votes until Thursday's Blockbuster removes one of the three nominees, and Rome saying he "wants to compete" is not empty talk — winning it is his cleanest exit from the week.

The most interesting read on this tension came at 1:57 PM, when Mallory privately told Lyric she wanted Rome to win the Blockbuster — but warned Lyric not to cast a lonely keep-Rome vote if the numbers weren't there, because an isolated vote would outcast them both. That's the whole week in one conversation: sentiment for Rome exists, but nobody's willing to be seen holding it.

Rome, meanwhile, spent the late afternoon campaigning by subtraction. At 4:09 PM he told Lyric and Mallory he wasn't seeking LaTrice and Taylor's votes, and — notably — promised he would not vote Devens out next week, despite Devens being the one who put him up. Whether that's magnanimity or math, it's a pitch aimed at the HOH rather than the electorate.

The middle starts playing Week 3

While the block dealt with the block, the players not on it started counting further ahead.

At 5:05 PM, Drew and Barrett had the kind of conversation that ages well or terribly: they described themselves as the middle, named Melody and Mallory as their respective parachutes, and agreed they'd like to sit together at final two. Barrett added that he did not want to sit next to Devens at the end. The Week 2 asset is already appearing in somebody's end-game math.

The middle is also thinking about optics. At 5:15 PM, Drew, Barrett, and Dee agreed the HOH-door lockout of Rome looked bad to America, and by 5:41 they'd moved on to brainstorming petty pranks — hiding the coffee pot and forks, leaving the Brita empty, shoes on the table — to provoke LaTrice into a blowup. The stated logic, per Dee around 5:55 PM: they need to stay hidden until other people start fighting. Manufacturing chaos as camouflage is a strategy with a long and mostly embarrassing history on this show, but at least they're saying the quiet part to each other.

Other texture from the afternoon: Melody vented about Angela's egg costume and what she called a victim routine, and at 6:25 PM Jason and Rome speculated Devens might land America's power — Melody joked she'd camp outside the Diary Room to find out.

The day closed on a quieter note. From 6:32 to 6:37 PM, Jason opened up to Lyric about a past relationship and his body insecurity. No game angle, just a nominee having a human conversation ahead of Thursday's Blockbuster. Worth noting; not worth dissecting.

What's not settled: everything Thursday. The Blockbuster pulls one nominee off the block before the vote, so there is no final pair and no eviction call to make. Rome is in real danger — the commitments against him are explicit and the HOH wants him gone — but "real danger" and "gone" are separated by exactly one competition, and Rome knows it.
